Wealthy Catholic entrepreneur and friend of the Jesuits, Thomas C. McHugh, sells his cannery company and makes a "promise to God" to donate $50,000 to a charity. He is advised by St. Joseph's pastor, Fr. John McHugh, S.J., (no relation) to consider helping the struggling Seattle College. McHugh purchases the seven-acre property from the Swedish Baptist missionaries, who are struggling to meet their mortgage. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. McHugh donate the property to Seattle College, which was also struggling financially. Shortly afterwards, the college and high school move to this new site. The property, adjacent to Interlaken Boulevard, is the site of the current Prep campus.
